Mount Pleasant Mews
We were appointed to deliver a planning application for Mount Pleasant Mews, a former underutilised workshop in poor state of conservation, located in a currently residential mews site within the Stroud Green Conservation Area in Islington, London.
In response to a brief that called for the creation of a modern and efficient home, we are proposing the addition of first and second floor levels, a roof extension and a substantial internal reconfiguration.
The historic brick walls and openings will be maintained as part of the design to honour its heritage, whilst a new thermal envelope will be created internally to ensure that the new dwelling meets its energy saving targets through a fabric-first approach to thermal efficiency.
The proposal seeks to create a new two-bedroom dwelling over 3 storeys within the footprint of the existing former workshop building.
Although highly physically constrained, due to the size and shape of the existing building, the proposal seek to create a high quality piece of architecture that makes a positive contribution to the local character of the conservation area through the considered articulation of the new massing and the existing highly distinctive façade elements.
The current materiality of the site is largely shaped by its former use as industrial workshops, predominantly characterised by yellow London Stock brick. As such, our material palette proposes to keep the existing yellow London Stock brick with the introduction of new London Stock brick with expressed vertical brick piers on the additional floor levels and a timber louvred gate, mirroring the recent conversions of the neighbouring properties.
The project has now been submitted for planning.
