The House of Architecture

In collaboration with Donald Insall Associates and IDK Architects we were shortlisted for the RIBA open competition to refurbish 66 Portland Place, home to the RIBA Headquarters.

Our ambitions went beyond breathing new life into this magnificent Grade II* listed building. To realise the fullest extent, the RIBA could shape the very future of our the profession, making the RIBA more relevant to its members. In response to this unique project, we have assembled a team united by a collective philosophy.

Through careful conservation, imaginative reconfiguration, well-crafted insertions, we pledged to:

  • Create an accessible and sustainable home for architects open to members and the wider built environment community.

  • Embrace sensitive regeneration and champion reuse to give bold, new and accessible life the listed building.

  • Create an exemplar of sustainability using the RIBA 2030 target to deliver a world-class, planet-first project.

  • Create and sustain opportunities for the marginalised and voiceless to be heard, and bring regional stakeholders together to disrupt social norms.

  • Deliver social value through educational opportunities and celebrate architectural excellence.

  • Enabling the RIBA to communicate its institutional values through access to, and exploration of, the wonders of the built environment and its tradition of crafts.

The RIBA’s motto translates from Latin as “For the use of the people and the glory of the city”. By stripping back, challenging and making visible the material and narrative layers of 66 Portland Place, we sort to enshrine these values, in our designs to create honest, embracing spaces fit for our now and prepared for the challenges of the  future.
