3 Mills

In collaboration with architects Gort Scott, Freehaus were appointed to deliver a sensitive renovation to the iconic TV and film production studios 3 Mills Studios.

The project, won through an open call competition, has significant grant funding from the Greater London Authority (GLA) Good Growth Fund, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Getting Building Fund (GBF).

The scope of works will see us working collaboratively with Gort Scott to fit-out and undertake remedial works to several of the characteristic and grade-listed buildings along Three Mill Lane.

The project will support the long-term viability of 3 Mills Studios through the creation of new workspaces and a refurbished screening room which will contribute to supporting the creative industries in east London, setting the scene for future public engagement within this historic part of London.

Three Mills island is a unique remnant of historic London and is the city’s oldest still-surviving industrial centre. The new creative spaces we have delivered, including the new screening room led by Freehaus will encourage the establishment of new businesses and employment opportunities by contributing to the economy of the Bromley-by-Bow area and providing a significant investment into the cultural sector, whilst supporting the growing TV and film industry in East London.

The Mayor of London unveiled the completed £6m development in July 2023, encompassing several of the site’s historic buildings and the creation of over 10,000sqft of creative workspace, boosting the environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and economic viability of these important heritage assets.
